Yellow Moong Dal Tadka (Boiled Indian lentil with Indian spices)


 I am going to share one basic recipe "Yellow Moong Dal Tadka" with you all today. Yellow Moong dal is very good for health as it is used in many ayurvedic recipes. Udupi satvik food also contains this grain and served in many ways.This special Indian lentil is amazing because I prepare desserts (ex :laddu and payasam),  rasam , kosambri , huggi (udupi style pongal), pongal(tamil nadu style) using this lentil. 
Enjoy this dish with hot rice along with any dry curry. Goes well with Indian breads too.

     
Serves 2

Ingredients :
two handfuls of split yellow moong dal
one small size onion (optional)
one small size tomato
2 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves
salt
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chilly flakes/ red chilly powder
1 tsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp jeera/cumin powder


For Seasoning:
9-10 curry leaves
1/2 tsp chopped ginger
one green chilly
1 tsp mustard
1 tsp urad dal
one dry red chilly slit into 2 pieces (optional)
1-2  tbsp oil

How to Prepare?

  • Chop onions, tomato , ginger and green chilly and keep it ready. Pressure cook the split yellow moong dal and keep it aside.
  • In a heavy bottomed cooking vessel/kadai heat oil. Add mustard seeds, urad dal and dry red chilies to it.After mustard seeds pop out, add curry leaves , green chilly and chopped ginger, fry for few secs. Now add chopped onions and turmeric powder to it .Fry till onions become golden brown. Now add chopped tomatoes and fry it for 5-6 minutes. 

  • Now add cooked lentil,salt, red chilly powder,cumin powder and one cup of water and bring it to boil. Let it boil for 5-6 minutes. Adjust the consistency by adding water.
  • Now add coriander leaves followed by quick stir. Add lemon juice and switch off the flame. Serve with any dry vegetable curry. want to checkout my dry curry recipe  Sauteed Mixed Veggies ??
                                  
Alternate/Tips:
  • As I mentioned above you can avoid onion , that's how my mom used to prepare as her most of the preparation is without onion and garlic.You can add asafoetida at the end too.
  • Instead of onion ,using shallots gives a amazing taste to the dish.
  • Adjust the consistency using adequate water.
