Whole Green Moong Dal Tadka/Cooked Indian Lentil with sauteed onions and tomatoes


I love the smell and color of whole green moong dal. Whenever I get bored of cooking dal Tadka using toor dal and split yellow moong dal , I go ahead with this dish. Its very tasty, easy to prepare and turns out very colorful every time :-)

Enjoy this dish with hot rice or roti/chapati.

     
Serves 2

Ingredients :
two handfuls of whole green moong dal
one small size onion
one medium size tomato
2 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves
salt
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chilly flakes/ red chilly powder
1 tsp lemon juice(optional)


For Seasoning:
9-10 curry leaves
1/2 tsp chopped ginger
one green chilly
1 tsp mustard
1 tsp urad dal
1/4 tsp jeera/cumin seeds
one dry red chilly slit into 2 pieces (optional)
1-2  tbsp oil

How to Prepare?

  • Soak the whole green moong dal for at least 5-6 hours.
  • Chop onions, tomato , ginger and green chilly and keep it ready. Pressure cook the soaked whole green moong dal and keep it aside.
  • In a heavy bottomed cooking vessel/kadai heat oil. Add mustard seeds, urad dal and dry red chilies to it.After mustard seeds pop out, add curry leaves , cumin seeds,green chilly and chopped ginger, fry for few secs. Now add chopped onions and turmeric powder to it .Fry till onions become golden brown. Now add chopped tomatoes and fry it for 5-6 minutes. 
 

  • Now add cooked whole green moong dal,salt, red chilly powder and one cup of water and bring it to boil. Let it boil for 5-6 minutes. Adjust the consistency by adding water.
 

  • Now add coriander leaves followed by quick stir. Add lemon juice and switch off the flame.
