Boiled Tangy Tomatoes in spiced Coconut gravy

This is one another typical south Indian cuisine.If you are bored of eating different variety of sambar, dals and curries prepared with different lentils , you can try this recipe just for change. Serve this dish with hot rice and spoon of ghee.

Ingredients:
2 medium size tomatoes
salt to taste
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp grated jaggery
1/2 tsp tamarind paste

For roasting:
1 and 1/2 tsp urad dal
4-5 fenugreek seeds ( this is just for flavor)
3-4 dry red chilies
1 tsp cooking oil
3-4 tbsp of fresh grated coconut/coconut flakes
1/4 tsp asafoetida powder

For Seasoning:
1/2 tsp urad dal
1 tsp mustard seeds
1/4 tsp jeera/cumin seeds
8-10 curry leaves

How to Prepare?
  • Chop washed tomatoes and keep it aside.
  • Roast all the ingredients mentioned under "for roasting"  in a tea spoon of oil and grind them to a smooth paste along with fresh coconut/coconut flakes.(Add little water while grinding)
     
  • Boil water in  a thick bottomed cooking vessel.Add chopped tomatoes, jaggery, pinch of turmeric and tamarind paste to boiling water. Let it boil until tomatoes becomes soft.
  • Now add ground paste and salt. Boil everything together for about 5 mins.
     
  • In the separate pan, Prepare the seasoning and add on top of it.Stir it well and cover the lid for 5 min,so that all the aroma will nicely combine with the dish.

  • Serve this dish with hot rice and spoon of ghee.
